Fashion Faceoff: Miranda Kerr vs. Rachel Bilson

This is one battle of the beauties! Victoria's Secret model (and new mom!) Miranda Kerr and style-savvy starlet Rachel Bilson (the name behind footwear website ShoeMint.com) go head-to-head after both donned the same patterned dress with a full skirt from Louis Vuitton's fall 2010 collection. Now, it's up to us to decide just who wore it best.

Miranda Kerr: December 2 Ryan Pierse/Getty Images

Rachel Bilson: May 3, 2010 Bryan Bedder/WireImage

Miranda, 28, stepped out in the design at a soiree for the launch of Louis Vuitton Maison in her hometown of Sydney, Australia, on December 2. She added a black belt and clutch, black peep-toe heels, a sleek ponytail, and classic red lipstick.
Rachel, 30, was the first to try the look at the Met Gala in NYC on May 3, 2010. The "Hart of Dixie" actress opted to accessorize with a belt in the same pattern as the frock's fabric (as shown on the LV runway), a black clutch and strappy sandals from Jimmy Choo, and ombre waves. (Remember when that was all the rage?)
Both ladies look lovely, but only one wore this retro dress best. I say it's Miranda, thanks to her chic belt, her understated 'do, and her Old Hollywood makeup. Rachel loses points for looking much more relaxed, almost underdressed for an event as fashionable as the Met Gala , which ends up costing her the competition. Don't worry, though, because a fashion veteran like this gal will no doubt show up in another of our faceoffs soon! Whose look do you like better?

Merry Christmas from the Kardashians … in 3-D

By now, it's surprising to no one that everything the Kardashian family does is ridiculously over-the-top -- from Kris' facelift to Kim's lavish wedding to Kourtney and Scott's dramatic fights. So when it comes to something like sending a Christmas card, fans know better than to expect an image of a snowman with a Santa hat. No, the reality fam chose instead to don complementary ensembles (bowties and the color black are prominent, but nothing too matchy-matchy) and have photographer Nick Saglimbeni snap their pic in 3-D!
The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" stars have created a holiday greeting every year since the trio of older sisters were little girls. In 2009, the producer of their reality show Ryan Seacrest even made his way into the pic! This time around, the card features a few relative newcomers to the clan, including Khloe's hubby of two years, Lamar Odom, Kourtney's boyfriend Scott Disick (near the couple's adorable little Mason!), as well as Rob Kardashian, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Bruce and Kris Jenner, and Khloe, Kim, and Kourtney Kardashian. One person who's missing, of course, is Kim's estranged husband, Kris Humphries, who looks like he would've fit perfectly into the space next to his bride ... if only they'd stayed together a couple more months. Sigh.
Justin Bieber: My Mom Never Let Me Believe in Santa Claus
Despite the lack of Kris' presence, both Kim and Kourtney raved about the card on their blogs, where they posted the pic. "I love our family Christmas cards shoots and I think this one looks amazing!," Kim wrote. Meanwhile, Kourtney noted, "There's nothing I love more than getting everyone together for the Christmas card shoot! I love everyone's matching bow ties!" Mason's mama also advised that fans who have 3-D glasses lying around the house check out the 3-D version of the greeting. "It's crazy!" she added.

Do you like the card? Will you check it out in 3-D? Or have you had enough of the reality family for 2011?

Orange Juice 'Secret Ingredient' Worries Some Health-Minded Moms

Natalya Murakhver, a New York food writer and mother of an 18-month year old daughter, loved her premium brand orange juice -- the "100 percent pure" and "not from concentrate" kind that comes in the colorful carton and tastes consistently delicious.
That is, until she said she learned from her first-time moms group that there's a "secret ingredient" in all premium orange juices that companies are not required to put on their labeling.
Now, after writing Whole Foods, she refuses to buy her favorite, "365" juice, amid uncertainty about its contents.
"One of the moms said she had read about [how the juice is made] and they held it in tanks for up to a year and it pretty much lost all of its flavor and had to be reinvigorated with these flavor packs, which are essentially chemicals," said Murakhver, 40, and co-author of "They Eat What?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World."
For the last 30 years, the citrus industry has used flavor packs to process what the Food and Drug Administration identifies as "pasteurized" orange juice. That includes top brands such as Tropicana, Minute Maid, Simply Orange and Florida Natural, among others.
Murakhver said the addition of the flavor packs long after orange juice is stored actually makes those premium juices more like a concentrate, and consumers need to know that.
Experts estimate two-thirds of all Americans drink Florida orange juice for breakfast, and companies spend millions on their marketing campaigns touting its health benefits.

The "not from concentrate" brands appeared on store shelves sometime in the 1980s to differentiate them from frozen juice and other bottled concentrates. Despite its high price tag -- now up to $4 a carton -- sales of the premium brands have soared.
But those juices don't just jump from the grove to the breakfast table.
After oranges are picked, they are shipped off to be processed. They are squeezed and pasteurized and, if they are not bound for frozen concentrate, are kept in aseptic storage, which involves stripping the juice of oxygen in a process called "deaeration," and kept in million-gallon tanks for up to a year.
Before packaging and shipping, the juice is then jazzed up with an added flavor pack, gleaned from orange byproducts such as the peel and pulp, to compensate for the loss of taste and aroma during the heating process.
Different brands use different flavor packs to give their product its unique and always consistent taste. Minute Maid, for example, has a distinctive candy-sweet flavor.
Kristen Gunter, executive director of the Florida Citrus Processors Association, confirmed that juices are blended and stored and that flavor packs are added to pasteurized juice before shipping to stores.
Flavor packs are created from the volatile compounds that escape from the orange during the pasteurization step.
But, she said, "It's not made in a lab or made in a chemical process, but comes through the physical process of boiling and capturing the [orange essence]."
The pasteurization process not only makes the food safe, but stabilizes the juice, which in its fresh state separates. Adding the flavor packs ensures a consistent flavor.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grades the quality of the juice based on color, flavor and defects.
"To get grade A, we have to blend it," she said. "Because oranges and their growing seasons vary, both the Valencia -- 'king of the oranges' -- and its lesser cousin, the Hamlin, are combined in the process.
"A processor is faced with harvesting the crop and giving the consumer some sense of what [he or she] might be getting," she said. "You buy branded orange juice, you kind of want it to taste, generally, the same. That expectation is met by blending different varieties and, in order to blend, storage is involved."

FDA Insists on Warnings for Fresh-Squeezed Juice

The Food and Drug Administration does not require adding flavor packs to the labeling of pasteurized juice (which includes the from-concentrate as well as the not-from-concentrate versions), because, "it is the orange," said Gunter.
Non-pasteurized juice must be labeled as such, with warnings about potential pathogens. These regulations have been in place since 1963, she said.
As for the New York City mothers, Gunter said, "I don't think there has been a large outcry."
"If consumers have the false impression that pasteurized orange juice is not heated or treated because they have a picture of an orange on the carton, then they are not informed," said Gunter.
"There's a lot of literature and movies taking the food manufacturers to task on food preparation," she said. "We have left the farms and it's just not possible to feed everybody. I love the raw-food crowd, but we cannot get that many oranges out to that many people before they go bad in refrigeration."
But Alissa Hamilton, a former food and policy fellow at the Institute of Agriculture and Trade, said that modern technology is so "sophisticated" that these flavor pack mixtures "don't exist in nature."
"They break it down into individual chemicals," she said. "The flavor of orange is one of the most complex and is made up of thousands of chemicals."
"They are fine-tuned so each company has its trademark flavor," said Hamilton, who is author of the 2009 book, "Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice."."
One that is used in a variety of foods, including alcoholic beverages, chewing gum and as a solvent in perfumes, is ethyl butyrate.
According to Doug Kara, a spokesman for the FDA's food safety division, the chemical is "generally recognized as safe as a food additive for flavoring."

"The orange juice companies market their premium brands as fresh-squeezed and better than concentrated," said Hamilton. "But it's a heavily processed product."
She advises on the blog, Civil Eats, that the freshest orange juice can be bought in May when the bright and flavorful Valencia oranges are harvested and have "not spent months in storage."
She adds that consumers can eat a whole Florida orange, which is higher in vitamin C than processed juice and much tastier.
As for health risks, Hamilton said, "I don't know," but many of the oranges used for juice come from mega-producer Brazil, where regulation of pesticides is not as stringent as in the U.S.
Still, according to the FDA's Karas, "We do screening of imports, and imported foods need to meet the same standards as do foods grown or produced domestically."
Mothers such as 36-year-old Yujin Kim, who has a 3-year-old and a 4-month-old, said she is concerned about what is in her orange juice.
"It's not arsenic but still something I didn't know I was drinking, so I ended up researching juice machines and bought one today," said Kim, who lives in New York City. "I definitely will not be buying any juice from now on."
"It makes sense that they would need to add chemicals for it to last through the transit time and for the consumers to buy and store at home," she said. "It's just wrong that they aren't being transparent about it. We as a consumer have a right to know exactly what's in the foods we are buying."
Her friend, Murakhver, said she has been buying "365" from Whole Foods "for years" and was under the impression that "all the ingredients were disclosed."
"It's arguable if it's bad for you or not. Still, it's a secret ingredient and no one seems to know about it," she said. "'Oranges' is all it says on the label -- a perfect product."
Concerned, Murakhver wrote to Whole Foods and got an email response, which she shared with ABCNews.com.
Whole Foods spokesman Julie Campbell wrote that she was unable to disclose the name of the company that makes its orange juice, "as that information is proprietary."
"Flavor Packs are typically made by fractional distilling the oil from orange peel; essentially concentrating the components," she wrote. "Flavor packs are used by other brands to standardize their products. We accomplish the same thing by blending orange juice from different varieties and parts of the season together."
"I don't know what that means," said Murakhver.
"There hasn't been a day in the last three years that we've not had it in the fridge and at the top of the shopping list with the milk," she said. "We are going to get a juicer and eat fresh fruit every morning and try to get our sugar high from fresh fruit.

encyclopedic, heavily illustrated history of fashion from 1860s to the present

"Fashion - 150 Years" is an encyclopedic work, not only in content but in size and weight. Fashion is taken from about the mid 1800s to the present. Seeling locates the beginnings of modern fashion about 1860 when the English clothing designer Charles Frederick Worth working in Paris put labels with his signature on the gowns he designed. Seeling sees this as turning clothing--however ornamental, stylized, or individualized--into art--Worth was the first "fashion designer."

Since Worth's innovative touch, there have been scores of outstanding fashion designers--all of whom make their appearance. The history of fashion from the mid 1860s is related in terms of profiles of the leading, most imaginative and skilled, most influential, and often most acclaimed fashion designers accompanied by abundant photographic material. One could follow the history just by following the copious, most color photographs. One sees how fashion spread out from its beginnings in Paris to the global, popular enterprise it is today. But one wants to read the profiles too for their colorful biographical material and ideas and approaches to fashion, and for putting the respective designer into the context of fashion history.

Seeling has been a top editor at Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Marie Claire after her time as a journalist interviewing many world-class celebrities. This incomparable work of hers can be used as a text on fashion history and also a reference. And its readable text plus the countless photographs give it the style of a popular book for informative and entertaining reading on fashion. And it's an ideal coffee-table book.

When Is It Worth Investing In Designer Fashion?

When it comes to designer clothing there are two types of people…the first are women who simply think it’s not worth the money and the other is women who adore designer fashion with many women just not able to afford spending so much money on one piece of clothing but others having the luxury of being able to splurge and wouldn’t be seen dead in high street clothing.

Despite these two opposites, more and more women are having an increased amount of disposable income as they become more affluent and independent, and every now and then are able to treat themselves to something with a bigger price tag and believe they deserve to splash the cash when they feel the need.

As designer fashion is rather expensive, most women can’t afford to have a wardrobe full of couture pieces but a sensible shopper can have a few key pieces in their wardrobe as long as they can justify the price spent on them. If you’re used to high street shopping and checking price tags then designer clothing can be rather intimidating. The key to designer fashion shopping is to know what you’re looking for and when you should spend your money to get the most designer clothing for your budget.

Timeless

This probably the most important thing to remember with designer clothing; always buy with versatility in mind. Make sure it’s a good addition to your wardrobe and won’t age easily, otherwise you won’t get much wear out of it.

Charity shops

If you love the idea of designer clothing but not the price tag why not check out charity shops? There are some amazing bargains to be found and some charities even have shops specifically for designer pieces, and what’s more is that you’ll also be giving to charity! It’s best head to a city to find the best bits though in areas where young and hip people hang out.

Accessories

It’s so easy to change your look with some fashion accessories like a bag, jewellery or a scarf. When buying designer accessories only choose an item that you’ve really fallen for and that will really make a different. Accessories are so cheap on the high street so make this one area that you really think about.

Little black dress

Every woman needs an LBD in her wardrobe; it’s so easy to wear for all occasions and will definitely be your fallback piece. This fashion classic is a good excuse to go designer because it’s one item that will never date and will always be needed. Go smart with it in the office and glam it up with some killer heels for a night on the town.

Signature pieces

If you’re thinking along the lines of getting the most for your money and the long term investment then it’s a good idea to buy a signature piece of designer clothing. Many designers produce key pieces and if you invest in one of these then you’ll be able to sell it on in the future. But don’t buy something for the sake of it; you really need to like it as well.

So those are the items of designer pieces you should look out for and consider buying if you’re looking to add designer clothing to your wardrobe, but, as you would expect there are also lots of things you should avoid buying. It’s important not to get addicted to buying designer fashion and to always stick to your budget. Don’t buy fashion trends and fads from designer names, stick to the high street for this because they’ll most likely have gone out of fashion within a few months and it’ll be a waste of money.

A Step by Step Guide to Sexy Smokey Eye Makeup

Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 1: Choose your eye shadow colours.
The traditional smokey eye makeup colours are, of course, black or grey. You are however not limited to these colour choices, you can also use less intense colours such as: violet, chocolate, coffee, dark pink, copper, dark green, dark blue or purple.
Remember when choosing eye shadow shades that colours should be chosen keeping in mind your eye colour, hair colour and skin tone and not the colour of the clothes you wear.
For smokey eye makeup you will need to choose 2 colour coordinated eye shadows. A darker feature colour and a lighter supporting colour.
For smokey eye makeup what feature colour eye shadow best suits blue eyes ?
For Blue eyes, in addition to black or grey, violet, purple or dark blue eye shadow will look great. The dark blue eye shadow in particular, as it will be darker than your eye colour, will accentuate your blue eyes.
For smokey eye makeup what feature colour eye shadow best suits green or hazel eyes ?
For Green or Hazel eyes, in addition to black or grey, try a deep khaki, dark green, brown, purple or plum colour eye shadow.
For smokey eye makeup what feature colour eye shadow best suits brown eyes ?
For Brown eyes, in addition to black or grey, copper, coffee, and brown will give you a great smokey eye effect.
Once you have chosen your feature eye shadow colour you need to choose your supporting eye shadow colour. If you prefer to use single eye shadows, rather than a colour coordinated duo or triple eye shadow, choose a light colour eye shadow that matches your feature eye shadow colour. Possible colours to choose from, for a soft sophisticated look, are: lilac, light peach, champagne, taupe, nude or a sand color. For a more dramatic high contrast look you could use a whitish colour eye shadow.
Smokey eye makeup tip: Use powdery eye shadows. Do not use creamy texture eye shadows as they are more difficult to smudge and blend.
Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 2: Choose your eyeliner pencil.
Choose a soft eyeliner pencil of the same colour or a complementary shade to your feature eye shadow.
Smokey eye makeup tip: If possible choose a Powderliner eyeliner pencil. They are easier to blend and are sometimes available with a sponge tip for easy blending.
Smokey eye makeup tip: Never use liquid eyeliner. Liquid eyeliners are better for sharper lines, not a soft and sultry finish.
Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 3: Apply your foundation base.
Normally you would apply your full foundation before applying your eye makeup. This is not the case when doing smokey eye makeup. You should apply your eye makeup first, that way if you get some of your eye shadow on the rest of your face you won't ruin your foundation. This also helps avoid a raccoon eye look under your eye. For smoother eye shadow application, that lasts longer, you do however want to first apply a thin layer of foundation to your eyelids followed by a thin layer of face powder to set the foundation. This will give you a clean canvas for your eye shadow and will also help to prevent the eye shadow from creasing. This will also give you more even, accurate, eye shadow application.
Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 4: Apply your eyeliner.
Line both the top and bottom rims of your eyes with your eyeliner pencil. Typically you would use a black or charcoal eyeliner pencil but you can also use a dark eyeliner pencil that matches your feature eye shadow colour. Make sure to go into the eyelash line itself (near the root of your eyelashes). Be sure to fill in any bare spaces between the eyelashes. Start from the inner corner of your eyes with a fine line. As you go outwards towards the corner of your eye make the line heavier. If you have any hard lines from using a heavy eyeliner pencil you will want to lightly smudge the line so it is softer and less harsh looking. This step is made a lot easier by using a Powderliner eyeliner pencil with a built in sponge tip for smudging.
Smokey eye makeup tip: Dark colors trend to make small eyes look even smaller. You can open your eyes up by applying eyeliner starting from the middle of the bottom eyelash line, rather than the inside corner, and going to the outer corner of the eye. If your eyes are not smallish feel free to apply the eyeliner from corner to corner.
Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 5: Apply your eye shadows
Using your larger eye shadow brush apply your supporting eye shadow colour to your eyelids, up to the base of your eyebrows.
Now, using your feature eye shadow colour, and your small eye shadow brush, apply your dark feature eye shadow onto the eyeliner and then blend it upward to the crease of your eyelid. When blending your feature eye shadow keep as much of the colour intensity as possible along the eyelash line and particularly in the outer corners of your eyes.
Smokey eye makeup tip: Remember smudge and blend so the eyeliner and eye shadows go together seamlessly.
Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 6: Apply your mascara
Smokey eye makeup tip: Curl your eyelashes before applying mascara, this opens your eyes up.
Apply 2 or 3 coats of black mascara applying the mascara in thin coats to avoid clumping.
Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 7: Complete your smokey eye makeup look
Complete your foundation being careful not to mess up your beautiful smokey eyes.
Keeping your lips neutral gives smokey eyes their real impact. Use a flesh toned lip pencil and a pink or caramel shade of lipstick or lip gloss to give your lips a subtle finish.
For your eyebrows you can use your normal eyebrow pencil. You could also use a shade darker than normal to complement your smokey eyes.
Apply a subtle finish of rose or tawny blusher just to the apples of your cheeks blending away to the edges into your hairline. This finishes the face without competing with your smoldering smokey eyes.
Enjoy your sexy, smoldering smokey eye makeup look!

The techniques Sexy and Fun Eye Makeup

The eyes are the windows of the soul, so the old adage says. To let people know that you have an ultra cool personality beneath that unassuming façade, emphasize the shape and color of your eyes using eyeliner and eye shadow. Although it comes in different colors, black eyeliner remains the favorite because it provides dramatic effect and can be used during the day and at night. There are so many colors of eye shadow that it can get confusing to choose which one best suits you. It all depends on the occasion and the result you want. Of course, the colors you put on will not be noticed or appreciated if they'd be blocked from view. It is imperative that you shave or pluck your eyebrows into a shape that emphasizes your eyes. To do all this perfectly, learn a few tried and tested eye makeup techniques.
Eyeliner is considered a staple in any woman's makeup kit. It provides versatile use: it dresses up the eyelid area, accentuates the eyebrows, can double as a lip liner, and can even be used to draw you a false mole, which is still deemed as a fashion statement. Eye shadow usually comes in pinks and browns. Thanks to the evolution in cosmetics, there are now hundreds of colors to choose from, each promising a different effect. There are no rules when it comes to picking out eye shadow, although natural colors are deemed to go well with the summer season and dark colors are appropriate for night events. With eyeliner in hand and a variety of eye shadow hues, you can do all sorts of wonderful things to your eyes.
The latest looks in eye makeup experiment in color and texture. With the right combinations, you can achieve a sexy or eye candy look.
To achieve a sexy look with the aid of eye makeup, creamy metallics are the way to go. Using metallic colors immediately brings to mind images of the goddesses in Greek and Roman mythology or of Cleopatra, the sensual Queen of Egypt. Choose an eyelid sparkler in soft, metallic cream and dab a smidgen of it on your lids. Then sweep a pressed powder eye shadow in metallic copper also on your lids to add a dark, sexy glaze. Use a clear mascara to lengthen your lashes. You want to keep the attention to your eyes, so a touch of champagne gold lipstick will be enough to complete the look.
Whether it's summer or fall, it's always a nice surprise to have playful colors on your eyes. You can achieve the eye candy look by creating a rainbow of colors using pink and coral blush and yellow eye shadow. After sweeping coral blush on your cheekbones, brush a pressed powder yellow eye shadow from the outer half of your cheekbones up to your temples. Then put a dark purple eye shadow on the lower part of your eyelids, and a light pink eye shadow on the upper part.
With these simple yet stylish eye makeup techniques, your eyes are sure to get the attention they deserve.

The Battle For Minimum Weight - Blacks and the Obesity Epidemic

Caught up in the frenetic grind of her fashion industry job, Allison Ferrell, 41, paid little attention to her increasing waistline. As Manager of Product Operation and Logistics for Abaete, a New York-based luxury apparel line, lunch was a luxury she couldn't afford. She said she was crazed and I couldn't spare the time so If I didn't eat by 1:00 p.m. that was it for the rest of the day.
After a 2005 surgery left her stomach upset, she routinely avoided a litany of foods and routinely skipped meals. Her erratic eating habits kicked her body into pre-starvation mode. Believing it was starving, her body stopped burning calories and began to store food reserves causing an increase in body fat. I'd had a good run, but my negative habits were catching up with me and now it was time to take care of myself."According to the American Council for Exercise, acceptable essential fat is 25-31% and obese is 32%; Ferrell measured almost 39%. Accustomed all her life to being thin, she was flummoxed by 23 pounds of extra fat.
Ferrell is hardly alone in her struggle to manage her weight. Plus sized women and strapping men are a celebrated norm within Black culture - the tacit acceptance of which is inhibitive to weight loss. From Thanksgiving and Easter dinners to barbeques and ho-downs, cooking and meal-sharing have been time-honored means of familial and communal bonding. Meals laden with fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol have long been cornerstones of traditional African American cuisine. While these foods are gastronomically appealing, they are detrimental to healthy living. It's difficult to change habits that are ingrained in our history, explains, dietician and nutritionist and co-owner of living Proof in New York.
Some of the culturally defining foods in Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean, such as olive oil, grains and vegetables are heart healthy. What is natural for African Americans is further down the food chain of nutritious. The American Obesity Association estimates that approximately 127 million adults are overweight, 60 million are obese and 9 million are morbidly obese. The escalating phenomenon of obesity has become a national crisis and is nowhere more evident than in African American communities. Recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show nearly 51% of black women are obese and a whooping 78% are overweight - the highest of all ethnic groups - almost 30% are obese and 67% are overweight.
Considering body type and height variations, the standard scale fails to provide an accurate measurement of body weight. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used formula which uses weight and height measurements to assess total body fat and provides healthy weight ranges for all ethnicities. BMI is also an indicator of heightened risk for developing diabetes, heart disease and other obesity-related illnesses. A BMI of 19-24 is considered healthy. However, a BMI of 25-29.9 is overweight and 30 and higher is obese. The waist circumference measurement calculates abdominal fat and is often used in conjunction with BMI to determine weight related conditions. Despite glaring evidence, many blacks have a poor perception of weight and fail to recognize their weight as problematic. Dr. Ian Smith, medical and diet expert for VH1's Celebrity Fit Club and ABC's The View explains that this speaks to the core concept of self-definition and what we think we look like. To change the tide, he insists, the imperative is to change the cultural mindset that promotes and sustains the behavioral habits cause obesity. The curvaceous, full-figured body is the feminine ideal in Black culture.
Many Black women are resistant to weight loss because they equate maintaining a healthy weight with losing their curves and by extension their attractiveness. Dr. Ian says, "There is a tendency to sexualize weight. You can be on the plus side but still be healthy. We shouldn't be defined by a condition that is damaging to our health, but instead by our courage, inner and outer beauty and our vigor for life." Dr. Leggett offers another perspective. There is no conflict between being sexy and physical fitness. Because individuals are resistant to exercise, they convince themselves that being overweight is a paradigm for sexy.
While a variety of factors contribute to obesity and overweight, the root causes remain the same: lack of exercise and poor nutritional choices. Dr. Christopher Leggett, Director of Cardiology for Medical Associates in Georgia and one of the country's foremost interventional cardiologist says that people enjoy sedentary lifestyle and the lack of dietary discretion in what, when and how much they eat, none of which is tempered by balance. Moreover, larger food portions, dependence on fast food and the barrage of media marketing by the food industry have played a major role in the erosion of overall health. Today's historic numbers are also largely attributed to the double-edged sword of technological advancement.
The ease and simplicity of modern living made possible by computer and digital technology discourages physical activity and permeates every aspect of society: food delivery, surfing the internet, computer-based office jobs and play station. Dr. Ian explains that people are less inspired to move and this means calories sit on their bodies and become fat. In addition, relentless work demands - commuting, long hours, working through lunch - requires that the basic necessities of self-preservation are cast aside. As the singular head of the household, black women are often responsible for balancing home, work, childcare and sometimes education with little time to squeeze in exercise. Dr. Leggett refutes this claim saying that many women spend hours on beautifying their external appearance when they set aside thirty minutes each day for exercise. Until individuals become actively engaged in healthy living the medical consequences of obesity will continue to escalate.
The consequences of obesity present a smorgasbord of debilitating illnesses including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension and certain cancers and have a domino effect on the body's physiology. What has been commonly considered "a little sugar" has morphed into a runaway epidemic affecting an estimated 18 million Americans, with Blacks at a 1.6 greater risk of developing the disease than whites. It also has consequences of stroke, kidney failure, amputation and blindness, and ranks first in direct healthcare costs, consuming $1 of every $7 spent on healthcare. Dr. Leggett explains Obesity is the primary cause of Type II diabetes which increases the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, resulting in an 80% death rate from heart attacks. Excess abdominal fat is highly active. It expands, releasing chemicals that ensure its continued existence. This in turn creates a resistance to the hormone insulin, which controls blood sugar. Increased insulin-resistance exhausts the pancreatic gland resulting in high blood sugar levels, which sets the stage for diabetes.
The cardio-vasculature of the body is impacted by elevated cholesterol and lipids in the blood. A build-up of Low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) and other food slush form plaque within the coronary arteries, the vessels that supply blood to the heart. This deposit eventually narrows the opening of the blood vessels that supplies organs with oxygen and nutrients. Dr. Leggett says that rupture of the arteries causes kidney and spinal chord stroke, in the coronary arteries causes heart attacks and in the carotid arteries, stroke or thrombosis, an obstruction of blood flow throughout the circulatory system. Blockages in the lower extremities often cause poor circulation, joint pain and even amputation.
With 45% of women and 42% of men twenty years or older suffering from the condition, African Americans have the highest rate of hypertension in the world. Research conducted by the National Obesity Association indicates that hypertension occurs 9% more frequently in obese individuals. Poorly controlled hypertension leads to stroke, which is the third cause of death and the primary reason for disability. As fat increases, so does the demand for oxygen and nutrients. The upsurge of blood circulating throughout the body adds pressure to the artery walls causing them to narrow and stiffen, resulting in an enlarged heart, stroke and kidney disease.
An American Cancer Society study shows that up to 90,000 cancer deaths annually can be attributed to obesity and overweight. Increased production of insulin and estrogen stimulates the growth of cancer cells. In women, obesity is related to elevated risk of uterine, breast, cervix, ovarian, renal cell and endometrial cancers; in men, with colon and prostate cancers. The high incidence and virulence of obesity-related diseases are exacerbated by lack of preventive care and appropriate health screenings. Dr. Ian posits that Blacks tend to visit the doctor later and by then these illnesses are less treatable and curable and the body is weakened. That's why whether it's talking to your physician or going to a free clinic, we must become more proactive about our own health.
An unspoken consequence of obesity is the double jeopardy of weight discrimination within the healthcare industry. Doctors' subjective opinion and prejudice negatively impacts medical treatment, care and outcome. A recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine shows discrimination in treatment of kidney failure, cancers and heart disease, despite the fact that these illnesses are more egregious in blacks than in whites. A physician may withhold treatment or a procedure, which may be optimal, based on latent feelings that the obese patient is lazy, lacks discipline and self-respect or will not follow the prescribed regimen.
With a distressing 30% of children ages 6-19 overweight and 15% obese, the prevalence of childhood obesity has skyrocketed over the past twenty years, ensuring a future wave of chronic, obesity related diseases, diabetes, hypertension and other ailments. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the probability of an obese child becoming an obese adult increases approximately 20% at four years old to 80% by adolescence. Alarmingly, African American girls across all socio-economic levels have the highest incidence: of ages 6-11, 38% are overweight and 22% are obese; ages 12-19, 45% and 27% respectively.
The calamitous combination of super-sized fast foods, video game culture and physical inactivity, enabled by parental complicity has swept the tide of childhood obesity to unprecedented heights. The typical adolescent diet is comprised of fats, cholesterol, sugar, Trans fat and devoid of fruits and vegetables; beverages are carbonated and loaded with high fructose corn syrup. Nutritionist Lisa Jubilee maintains there are numerous ways parents can set better examples for children. She says if you must eat fat food, skip the fries sometimes, get a smaller size or choose a salad. Instill the habit of eating a fruit as an after-school snack or have one with cereal in the morning."
Today's children are the most inactive in history, largely owing to the pervasiveness of stationary entertainment such as Play station and X box games and video television. Urbanization and the reduction of physical education in schools have resulted in the frequency and decline of exercise. The American Academy of Pediatrics report shows that 25% of children 8-6 years watch at least four hours of television daily and having a television in the bedroom is a strong indicator of obesity development, even in preschool-aged children. Inner city children are purportedly hindered by the inability to walk or bike safely to school or play outside later. Moreover, many lack the means and the inclination to venture outside the familiar confines of their neighborhood and into suburban or rural environs.
Children are becoming fatter at a younger age, Dr. Leggett observes. Some are presenting early sign of heart disease and blood vessel damage. But you can't blame them when parents are supposed to be in charge of the food environment. The list of obesity-related illnesses in children is comparable to adults'. Hypertension occurs 9% more frequently in obese children and doctors have also observed signs of heart disease. In 1997, the growing number of children with environmentally-influenced diabetes prompted a name change from adult-onset to Type 2 diabetes. Excess weight also triggers bronchial spasms, the hallmark of asthma. Other consequences include sleep apnea, orthopedic complications and delayed menstruation in girls. The psychological effects are immensely damaging and often persist into adulthood. Obese children experience social alienation and teasing which become catalysts for depression, eating disorder and high risk behaviors.
Make no mistake - being fat costs. Obese and overweight individuals can expect higher medical expenses and insurance premiums, tend to earn less and create less wealth in their lifetime. As the country faces a burgeoning healthcare crisis, the medical cost of obesity-related illnesses is an estimated $93 billion, 85% of which is covered by government programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. The cost to each tax payer is $180 annually. Routine care for preventive, diagnostic and treatment services can reach $7,000 in yearly out-of-pocket expense. Decreased productivity, absenteeism, sick days, disability and restricted movements are costly to both workers and employers. Weight penalty is also exacted through social stigmatization and impediments to career advancement. Many experience difficulty finding employment, securing a promotion or a coveted assignment based on the belief that they are lazy and weak-willed.
Is it possible to halt the upward trend of obesity? Healthcare experts agree that education and moderation are keys to incorporating healthy habits into daily living. Despite the promises of diet pill pushers and the growing popularity of bariatric and gastric bypass surgeries, the surest solution to weight loss remains diet and lifestyle changes. Jubilee, who requires clients to keep a food journal, formulates eating plans tailor-made for the lifestyle and needs of the individual. She suggests that individuals begin by walking every day and introduce new, wholesome foods into your diet so you can live longer than your forefathers. For Ferrell, she suggested different ways to prepare old favorites such as baking instead of frying and minimizing the amount of batter used to make biscuits. Small steps are necessary to make the big changes that will sustain weight loss. Ultimately, African Americans have the means and opportunity to overcome the tide of obesity and overweight by setting new, grander examples of healthy living for this generation and the next.

New York Fashion Week - Tempest In The Big Apple

For the many people involved in fashion, you may be wondering exactly what is New York fashion week? As it is, New York fashion week is a week long occasion that began on June 7th in the year 1993 and is supported currently by Olympus. Fashion week is frequently known as Olympus fashion week due to the fact that its current sponsor is Olympus; however in recent years past its was also known as Mercedes Benz fashion week because they were the sponsors at that time.
The venue for this occasion takes place in Bryant Part in New York City (located at the corner of forty-second and sixth streets). The which is eight acres in size is changed into an immense arena of fashion garnered in large tents.
Each separate gigantic tent has air conditioning and is separated into several areas. Each individual venue is separated into roughly twelve thousand square feet and has an integrated runway, accompanying guest seating, lighting sound, as well as area for back stage activities.
The venues are used by the designers to present their ongoing designs and work; they arrange and furnish the area in accordance with their own personal taste. The tent walls are outfitted with small booths, where products designated for promotion are being given away or sold. New York fashion week happens two times a year.
Designs for the forthcoming fall season are featured at the fashion week show which occurs the preceding February. Designs for the approaching spring are featured in the September fashion show.
So Your Thinking About Going to Fashion Week?
The typical attendees at fashion week are celebrities, journalists, fashion purchasers, and social types. Because this event is by invitation only, journalists who wish to go must seek accreditation prior to the event. You will very likely see just a few celebrities at each show.
It is clear, you will very likely notice fashion models in addition to numerous well known designers. If you happen to work your way into an invitation to the event, curiously there is not formal type of dress code to follow. The majority of individuals adopt the "anything goes" rule.
Although comfort does play a part, the primary goal of dressing up for fashion week is to establish a unique wardrobe that will give expression to your own individual sense of fashion. If your an individual who has a passion for design fashions, then a trip to fashion week is the event for you.
In addition to receiving the opportunity to witness all the up to date designs prior to then showing up in stores, you will have an incredible amount of fun as well. So even though it might appear to be next to impossible to receive an invitation to fashion week, never say never - if nothing else, at a minimum you can read about the exciting events at the show in the latest fashion trend magazine.

How to Get Fair Skin: A Holistic Approach

How to get fair skin? First of all, recognize that there's nothing wrong with wanting to make your skin lighter. After all, countless light-skinned people go tanning each year, and that's the same basic idea, just in reverse.
Why is your skin dark in the first place? There are a few reasons:
Your genetics obviously play a huge part. If your ancestors come from a hot, sunny climate, like India, or Africa, their bodies adapt to that heat by producing more melanin. More melanin equals darker skin equals greater protection from the sun. It's evolution.
Your amount of sun exposure is also a factor. The more time you spend in the sun (or in a tanning booth), the more melanin your bodies produces in order to protect you from UV rays.
So, how do you overcome these factors to get fair skin? The first, and most obvious, thing to do is keep out of the sun as much as possible. If you have to go out in the sun, at least apply 30 spf sunblock half an hour before you go out, and wear a big hat to protect your face.
Another thing you can do is to exfoliate, or remove dead skin cells on the surface of your face. Doing this can help to stimulate new skin growth, which-because you're keeping out of the sun, right?-ought to be lighter in color than it is now. You can exfoliate using facial scrubs, chemical peels, hydroxy acids, and even lemon juice. Just make sure not to overdo it, because if you exfoliate too much, you'll rub your skin raw and it will look worse. Be gentle here.
You'll want to make to optimize your diet and supplement intake for the healthiest skin possible. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and make sure to drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated. At least eight glasses a day, although ten or twelve might be better.
Two more things that are good for your skin are exercise and rest. Exercise is good for your body; it improves your circulation, which increases the blood flow to your skin. This means that your body becomes more efficient at transporting essential nutrients to your skin, so it can look its best. And getting enough sleep is essential; there's a reason they call it, "beauty sleep." Your body takes advantage of the time you're asleep to repair damage. So if you're getting less than eight hours of sleep a night, rest assured: your skin is suffering.
Lastly, let's talk about some products to give you lighter skin.
There are many different bleaching creams available, and if you're still unsatisfied with your complexion, they're worth looking into. If you're going to go this route, look for a product with hydroquinone. Just be aware that some of these are not very healthy for your skin.
If you don't want to use bleaching creams, don't forget about makeup! Don't overdo it here, but a little makeup can definitely lighten your skin tone just a little. Combine this with the natural skin-boosting tips found earlier in this article, and your face will be glowing and radiant in no time.
The last tip I'd like to add is a new technology called sound healing. Basically, scientists have invented machines to create vibrations at certain frequencies, in essence giving your body the frequency-equivalent (FE) of different nutrients. So if you're really serious about learning how to get fair skin, check out this website, where you can purchase a sound healing product designed specifically to deliver nutrients to your skin for a beautiful complexion.

Makeup Tips for Redheads

Redheads are known to be sexy, mysterious, and glamorous. There are a lot of famous redhead celebrities in Hollywood such as Evan Rachel Wood, Christina Hendricks, Nicola Roberts, and Emma Stone just to name a few. Women emulate them all the time because they are the epitome of hotness, and they are oozing with appeal.
If you are one lucky redhead, here are some beauty tips that you should follow to enhance and make the most out of your natural beauty.
For the face
According to a beauty and makeup blog that I have read, redheads should not use a foundation that has pink undertones because it can add more warmth to your complexion. Instead, you should choose foundation shades that have yellow undertones. If you have freckles, I think that you should not use thick concealer or foundation to cover them up because they add character to your face. However, if you still desire to cover them up, I recommend that you apply a tinted moisturizer or foundation first. If the freckles are still visible, then it is time to apply a thin layer of concealer. Furthermore, if you desire, you can lightly swipe highlighter or bronzer on the bridge of your nose, forehead, chin, and cheeks.
For the cheeks
As much as possible, stay away from too pink or red shade of blushes as these can add more warmth to your already warm complexion. If you have a fair skin tone, you should opt for coral shades. I recommend that you stick to plum shades if you have a darker complexion.
For your eyes
In my opinion, earth tones look the best on redheads. You can wear different shades of brown, green, and other warm tones to complement the color of your hair. However, I highly recommend that you stay away from black eyeliner because it can look too harsh on your complexion. You should stick to brown eyeliners instead to enhance the natural shape of your eyes. As for your eyebrows, fill them in with a shade lighter than your hair color.
For the lips
Based from a beauty and makeup blog post that I have read before, redheads should stick to peach and coral shades of lipsticks. There are some people though who think that redheads should not use red lipsticks. You should know though that redheads can still wear red lipstick for a sexier and more glamorous effect. However, I suggest that you choose a red lipstick that has a blue base instead of one that is orange-based.
In the end, it all boils down to trial and error. You should try different makeup looks for you to determine which will work best for you.

Supermodels That Have Changed The Fashion World

What does it take to be considered a face of the fashion industry? Who are the long-limbed, leggy, glamazons that make the world's most elite and beautiful couture come alive? They are the world's most sought after supermodels. They are tall, thin and glamorous. They look good in every type of outfit under the sun. They work with the most renowned fashion designers. They are the faces you see on runways, in magazines and on billboards. Fashion school students study them. The whole world admires them. Here are just a few of these game-changing supermodels and the influence they have left on the world of fashion design.
Cindy Crawford is more of an enterprise than a mere supermodel. In the mid 80's the wholesome, Midwestern Crawford made waves on the scene with her sexy body and her famous mole. She went on to grace the covers of hundreds of magazines, and she sauntered down many a catwalk. From there, she got endorsements for makeup lines and soft drinks, and appearances in Hollywood films. In 1995, Forbes magazine named Crawford the world's highest-paid model. Her career has slowed down a bit since getting older, married, and having children, but the nineteen-nineties will always belong to Miss Crawford.
According to most fashion college students, the Brazilian-born Gisele Bundchen might as well be the first lady of modeling. Her body and face are virtually perfect, and not to mention a breath of fresh air for anyone who's grown tired of the pouting, emaciated model. Gisele's figure is shapely and proportional and super feminine with wide hips and breasts. Since 1999 she has been a top model, and top choice for photographers and fashion houses. She earns millions of dollars per year between endorsements and photo shoots, and she is one of the world's highest-paid models in history.
Naomi Campbell is more than just a pretty face. In fact, it's safe to say that no discussion of supermodels would be complete without the mention of Naomi Campbell. This sultry British import practically breathed life into the term. Campbell broke ground as the first black woman to ever appear on the cover of Time magazine and British and French Vogue. She is also renowned for her fierce runway stomp. Aside from modeling, she had a number one single in Japan with "La, La, La Love Song," and steamed up the small screen in Michael Jackson's "In The Closet" video. Additionally, she turned in a strong performance in Spike Lee's Girl 6. Aside from legal troubles now and then, Miss Campbell is virtually unstoppable.
Campbell, Crawford and Bundchen are certainly legendary supermodels, idolized by aspiring models, fashion school students and fashion lovers everywhere. Who knows when the next fresh face will stun everyone by arriving on the scene? Fashion is a fast-paced industry, and each day is a new day.
